Award-winning Nigerian singer and songwriter Ayra Starr has officially joined the highly anticipated movie adaptation of Children of Blood and Bone, the best-selling fantasy novel by Tomi Adeyemi. The announcement adds Starr to an already impressive cast of talent for the film, which is being produced by Paramount Pictures and directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood.
Ayra Starr, known for her dynamic musical talent and captivating performances, will share the screen with a diverse ensemble of actors, including Saniyya Sidney (Fences), Zackary Momoh (Harriet), Richard Mofe-Damijo (Namaste Wahala), Pamilerin Ayodeji (Mikolo), Shamz Garuba (Crime and Justice Lagos), Kola Bodunde (Shadow), and Temi Fagbenle. Ayodeji and Garuba were selected through an open casting call held in Nigeria, adding a layer of local representation to the international project.
The initial casting announcement in February revealed other notable names in the cast, including The Underground Railroad star Thuso Mbedu, The Hunger Games’ Amandla Stenberg, Damson Idris (Snowfall), Tosin Cole (Doctor Who), and several iconic actors such as Viola Davis, Cynthia Erivo, Idris Elba, Lashana Lynch, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Regina King, Diaana Babnicova, and Bukky Bakray.
The film adaptation of Children of Blood and Bone is based on Adeyemi’s critically acclaimed novel, which centers around a young girl named Zélie Adebola who embarks on a journey to restore magic to the oppressed people of Orïsha. The book was praised for its deep exploration of themes such as power, race, and resilience, making it an exciting project for fans of fantasy and African storytelling.
Directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, known for her work on The Old Guard and Love & Basketball, the film is set to be a major cinematic event. The adaptation is slated for release in theaters in 2027, promising a visual spectacle filled with powerful performances and a rich, immersive world.
