A church in Kapkwen, Bomet County, has been closed following alarming reports that members were reportedly subjected to violent beatings as part of an exorcism ritual. The situation arose when two women, both church members, fled the altar in fear after they could no longer tolerate the mob beatings allegedly carried out by their pastor.
The two women escaped and later reported the incident to the Kapkwen Police Station, which led to an immediate intervention by law enforcement. The event has attracted significant attention and concern from local officials.
Bomet County Police Commander Edward Imbwaga confirmed the church’s closure on Friday, stating that investigations into the claims are ongoing. He also mentioned that police are currently searching for those responsible for the violent actions and are assessing whether the church is officially registered and its duration of operation.
“The search for those responsible is ongoing, and we are also verifying if the church has proper registration and is operating within the law,” Imbwaga stated. “We have discovered that a majority of the church’s congregation is composed of women.”
In the meantime, the two women who escaped the abusive situation were taken to a local hospital in Bomet, where medical staff confirmed they had sustained numerous bruises and injuries. Felix Langat, the County Chief Officer for Health, noted that the women arrived at the hospital with visible injuries across their bodies, including bruises on their legs and faces.
“They exhibited bruises on their legs and faces, suggesting they had endured significant trauma,” Langat remarked. “They received medical care and were subsequently referred back to the police to fill out a P3 form for documenting the assault.”
This incident has incited anger among local community members, who are demanding action against such dubious religious practices in the region. Authorities have encouraged any other potential victims of similar occurrences to come forward without hesitation.
As the investigation progresses, officials are striving to ensure that appropriate legal measures are taken against those accountable and to prevent such alarming practices from persisting in the community.
