Charlie Jones, the boyfriend of renowned Kenyan journalist Betty Kyallo, recently shared a disconcerting experience involving death threats in the virtual world of Grand Theft Auto (GTA). In a post on his Instagram stories, Jones revealed that he had received a menacing message from an anonymous user, who wrote, “You are next,” sending chills through his followers.
The message came from a user with the handle “walkudowntilluexpire@affccb.org,” and though the nature of the threat was alarming, Jones took to social media with his characteristic humor. Responding with his usual laid-back attitude, he joked, “Who got a GTA bounty on my name?”
The reference to a “bounty” is part of GTA Online, a popular multiplayer game mode where players can place a financial reward on the head of another player, and other gamers can attempt to eliminate the target to claim the bounty. The game’s bounty system is a competitive and sometimes dangerous feature, adding tension and excitement to the gameplay.
In the game, players who survive a bounty for a specific amount of time—usually 24 in-game hours, or about 48 minutes in real-time—get to keep the money, making it a coveted challenge. Bounties can be placed by non-player characters (NPCs) or other players, and the stakes often include daring missions or high-risk actions like stealing vehicles.
Despite the ominous message, Charlie Jones remained unphased, responding with wit and humor, likely turning what could have been a nerve-wracking situation into a moment of levity for his fans. The true intentions behind the anonymous message remain unclear—whether it was a playful joke or part of an online trolling episode.
Ultimately, Jones’s easygoing response demonstrates how, even in the face of virtual threats, maintaining a sense of humor can be a helpful way to manage the tension that comes with online gaming.
