After more than two decades at the helm of Versace, Donatella Versace, 69, is stepping down from her role as the creative director of the iconic fashion house. She will now assume the position of Chief Brand Ambassador, with former Miu Miu design director Dario Vitale set to take over as the new creative leader.
In a heartfelt statement, Donatella expressed her excitement for the future of the brand and her deep commitment to the next generation of designers. “Championing the next generation of designers has always been important to me,” she said. “I am thrilled that Dario Vitale will be joining us, and I look forward to seeing Versace through new eyes.”
She also took a moment to thank the talented team she’s worked with over the past three decades: “It has been the greatest honor of my life to carry on my brother Gianni’s legacy. He was the true genius, but I hope I have some of his spirit and tenacity.”
Although Donatella is stepping away from her creative role, she made it clear that she will remain deeply involved with the brand as its most passionate supporter. “Versace is in my DNA and always in my heart,” she affirmed. Donatella also plans to focus on supporting the brand’s philanthropic efforts and continue advocating for Versace worldwide.
Dario Vitale, who takes over from Donatella, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to lead the fashion house. “The House of Versace has a unique heritage that has spanned decades and has shaped the history of fashion,” Vitale said. “It is a privilege to contribute to the future growth of Versace and its global impact.”
Founded in Milan in 1978 by Donatella and her brothers Santo and Gianni, Versace was sold to the Michael Kors group in 2018 and later became part of Capri Holdings. Throughout her career, Donatella has dressed some of the world’s biggest stars, including Madonna, Beyoncé, and Michelle Obama, with unforgettable designs like Jennifer Lopez’s iconic jungle dress and the dress Michelle Obama wore for her final state dinner. As she transitions into her new role, Donatella remains a powerful figure in the fashion world.
