This month marks 22 years since the tragic death of Kenyan music legend Issah Mmari Wangui, better known as E-Sir. The artist, whose career shone brightly in just three years, tragically lost his life in an accident on March 16, 2003. In a recent conversation with Dr. Kingori and veteran artist Nameless, E-Sir’s younger brother, Habib, shared a deeply emotional reflection on the final days before his brother’s passing.
Habib revealed that E-Sir seemed to know his time was near. In the days leading up to the accident, he spoke of life in a reflective, almost prophetic way, constantly mentioning that “things were about to change.” At the time, Habib didn’t fully grasp the weight of these words. It wasn’t until he received the heartbreaking news of E-Sir’s death that he realized his brother had been prepared.
Habib shared memories of helping his brother with his music career, from packing signed CDs to assisting in the studio. He also recalled E-Sir’s insistence that he stay behind while E-Sir traveled to Nakuru for a concert. “Stay home and look after mom,” E-Sir told him, a remark that now feels like a premonition.
The tragic news came the morning after E-Sir’s trip, when fellow artist Big Pin arrived at their home in tears, breaking the devastating news that E-Sir had passed away.
