Carl Rinsch, a prominent filmmaker known for directing 47 Ronin, has found himself at the center of a major fraud scandal. Federal authorities have charged Rinsch with wire fraud and money laundering after allegedly embezzling over $11 million from Netflix, which was intended for the production of a science-fiction series he was hired to direct.
Rinsch, 47, was arrested earlier this week following the unsealing of an indictment filed in New York federal court. The charges stem from an alleged scheme in which Rinsch took money from Netflix, originally provided for the series Conquest, and diverted it to his personal use. The show was meant to focus on clones living in a Brazilian city and developing advanced technology.
Netflix had initially invested $44 million in the project, following a successful pitch that included six short-form episodes. However, Rinsch requested an additional $11 million to complete the project, which Netflix granted. According to federal prosecutors, Rinsch quickly transferred these funds to various personal accounts and used them to purchase luxury items like a Ferrari and five Rolls-Royce cars. He also invested in cryptocurrency, purchased high-end furniture, and used some of the funds to pay for legal expenses related to his divorce and a lawsuit against Netflix.
This case sends a strong message about corporate fraud, with the FBI stressing its commitment to holding individuals accountable for such actions. Rinsch faces significant legal consequences, including the potential for decades in prison if convicted. The investigation remains active as authorities continue to track Rinsch’s financial dealings.
