Former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairperson Wafula Chebukati has sadly passed away. Chebukati, who had been receiving treatment at a Nairobi hospital, died on the night of Thursday, February 20.
He had been hospitalized for nearly a week and had been under close medical care in the Intensive Care Unit.
Chebukati served as the IEBC chairperson for six years, from January 2017 to January 17, 2023. During his tenure, he played a pivotal role in overseeing the 2017 and 2022 general elections, periods marked by significant political developments and challenges. His leadership during these crucial times earned him both praise and criticism, but his contribution to Kenya’s electoral process will be remembered.
