The Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) has officially appointed Geoffrey Monari as its new Chief Executive Officer (CEO), starting March 13, 2025. Monari, who brings over 15 years of experience in the education financing sector, is set to lead HELB during a critical period of development and transformation in the country’s education system.
Before his new role at HELB, Monari was the founding CEO of the Universities Fund, where he played an essential role in shaping how universities in Kenya are financed. His leadership at the Universities Fund, which he led since 2020, focused on creating policies and frameworks that helped improve the way universities access and use funds.
Monari’s connection with HELB isn’t new either. From 2016 to 2020, he served as the Chief Operations Officer (COO) at HELB, where he led key initiatives that improved student loans, debt collection, and ways of working with stakeholders. His work during this time helped make HELB’s financial operations more sustainable and strengthened its partnerships with other organizations.
Monari holds a Master of Business Administration (MBA) and a Bachelor of Commerce degree. He has also completed a Senior Management Leadership Program and is currently enrolled in the prestigious Global CEO Africa Programme at Strathmore Business School.
The HELB Board is confident that Monari’s wealth of experience and leadership skills will be key in driving the institution forward. “With his deep knowledge of higher education financing, Monari has the vision and expertise needed to take HELB to new heights. We are excited to have him lead us as we continue to serve students and educational institutions across Kenya,” the Board stated.
Monari’s appointment comes at a pivotal time for HELB as it focuses on improving how students access financial support for education, speeding up the loan application process, and creating a more sustainable system for loan repayments. His leadership is expected to ensure that more students across the country can benefit from HELB’s services, helping them achieve their academic and career goals.
