Kamene Goro, a prominent figure in the media industry, has recently shared an intriguing glimpse into her past, revealing that she once earned over KSh 1 million monthly while working in radio. This revelation came during an appearance on a popular cooking show hosted by Boina, where Kamene opened up about her career journey and the rewards of working in the media industry.
When asked about the possibility of hosting a Kiswahili radio show for KSh 1 million, Kamene didn’t hesitate to share that she had earned more than that during her time in radio. “Radio is a very rewarding career. I’ve been paid more than that,” she said with confidence. Kamene’s words reflected the lucrative side of radio, highlighting the potential for financial success in the field.
However, despite the attractive offer, Kamene made it clear that hosting a Kiswahili show wasn’t on her agenda. She admitted that her command of the language wasn’t as strong as she would have liked, saying, “My Kiswahili isn’t that great, and I just can’t do it.” Her style, she explained, was rooted in storytelling and sharing personal experiences, which was quite different from the more formal structure of a Kiswahili broadcast.
Kamene took a moment to reminisce about her radio career, recalling her time co-hosting with Jalang’o at Kiss FM. She fondly remembered the ease of their collaboration, praising Jalang’o for his down-to-earth nature that made their partnership enjoyable. “Jalang’o was one of my favorite co-hosts. He’s very easygoing, and that made our work together effortless,” she said.
Now, as the Head of Brand at NRG Radio, Kamene has found a new purpose within the industry. She’s passionate about guiding young and aspiring radio personalities to success. Offering some valuable advice, Kamene stressed the importance of self-discipline and authenticity. “Many people come into the industry but don’t last because they lack discipline,” she said. “The key to making it is consistency and being real with your audience.” Kamene also highlighted the importance of being a great storyteller, a skill she believes is essential for any radio presenter. “If you’re not reading and expanding your knowledge, it’s hard to tell meaningful stories. You need to be constantly learning to engage and inspire your listeners.”
Kamene’s journey from a top radio host to a key figure at NRG Radio is a testament to her versatility and passion for the industry. Her candid insights into the challenges and rewards of radio serve as a guiding light for those hoping to make it in the competitive world of media.
