Women vendors in Malindi town, located in Kilifi County, have received vital assistance to enhance their businesses, thanks to an initiative spearheaded by Malindi MP Amina Munyazi. The support aims to offer essential resources to local vendors, particularly those who sell “mnazi,” a traditional beverage made from coconut sap.
During an event held in Mbuzi Wengi, Amina Munyazi urged women to form groups, allowing them to access government grants and loans that could facilitate the establishment and growth of their businesses. This initiative is part of a larger effort to economically empower women by providing them with the necessary tools for success.
Over 100 members of the Malindi Manzi Sellers Women Group were given market umbrellas designed to shield them from harsh weather conditions while they carry on with their work. In addition to the umbrellas, the women received Ksh 100,000, which will act as a rotational loan fund to help maintain and expand their enterprises.
Many of these women run their businesses along roadways and in public areas, exposing them to various weather conditions. “These hardworking mothers face tough circumstances while trying to earn a living. It was crucial to support them with umbrellas for protection,” stated MP Amina Munyazi.
The beneficiaries expressed their appreciation for the help, highlighting how this support would significantly influence their businesses. “We are businesswomen who spend long hours under the blazing sun. We are truly grateful to Amina Munyazi for providing us with umbrellas to safeguard ourselves,” remarked Loyce Dama, one of the vendors.
The difficulties brought about by the high cost of living were also recognized. Gladys Karembo, another vendor, mentioned that the financial aid of Ksh 100,000 would be vital in helping them sustain their businesses. “The escalating cost of living has made it challenging to manage our businesses, but we are thankful for the Ksh 100,000, which will support our survival,” she stated.
Elizabeth Muthoka, a local resident, also praised the MP for her empathetic efforts. “Many women vendors struggle during both rainy and sunny seasons due to a lack of shade. I appreciate Hon. Amina Munyazi for hearing our pleas and providing assistance,” she expressed.
Sheila Ward, the MCA of Twahir, was also present at the event and commended Munyazi’s leadership. “This is the kind of leadership we expect and need in Malindi—leaders who listen to and respond to the needs of the community,” Ward commented.
Through this initiative, Amina Munyazi has not only delivered practical support to these women but has also exemplified leadership that prioritizes the well-being and economic empowerment of the community.
