Member’s of County Assemblies (MCAs) have demanded a salary increase of 700%, pressing on the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) that it should be the bare minimum .
Adding that their current salary does not match their responsibilities.
Speaking at the 5th County Assembly Summit held in Nairobi ,Majority leader Peter Imwatok argued that MCAs salaries should be equal to that of a Governor.
Saying “MCA is getting a salary of 80k ,it is not tenable at all.MCA should get a salary close to that of a governor. The governor is getting 560,000 without adding allowances “.
“Mps are getting 35% of the president’s salary .MCAS 10% of the governor’s Really? and you expect oversight. It does not work ,we are paid like cleaners”those were the words of Jared Ouma Migori County Assembly Majority Leader.
An MCA earns a basic salary of Ksh 92,689 with a house allowance of 50,000 bringing their gross salary to Ksh 154,481 following a recent adjustment of Ksh 11,792.
They also receive a committee sitting allowance of Ksh 3900 per session capped at Ksh 62,400 monthly.
The MCAs have also demanded immediate implementation of the ward development fund and Independent financial autonomy from the County Executive.
“We cannot effect oversight if the same County executive is your salary remitter.Kindly let us be autonomous take us to job group E1”.
A comprehensive review will be undertaken in the coming months to conclude on the way forward.
