Pope Francis has encouraged Catholics worldwide to keep him in their prayers as he undergoes treatment for double pneumonia in a hospital. This marks the second consecutive Sunday that the Pope has been unable to personally preside over his usual Angelus prayer.
In a message shared over the weekend, the 88-year-old Pope assured his followers that he is “confidently continuing” his care at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital, where he is receiving attention from medical staff. He also expressed gratitude for the hospital personnel and for the many supportive messages he has received.
On Saturday, the Vatican reported that the Pope’s condition is still considered “critical.” In his Sunday speech, Pope Francis reflected on the deep affection he has received, particularly from children, whose letters and drawings have deeply touched him. “The love and prayers from all corners of the world move me,” he remarked, requesting continued prayers and placing everyone under the care of Mary.
The Pope was admitted to the hospital on February 14th due to breathing difficulties. Considering his past lung issues, including pleurisy and a previous surgery to remove part of a lung, his health remains fragile. Throughout his papacy, the Pope has undergone several hospital stays, including one in March 2023 for bronchitis.
The Vatican has been consistently updating the public on the Pope’s health, with the latest report indicating that while he is alert and spent some time in an armchair, his condition is still unstable. He has needed blood transfusions and high-flow oxygen to assist in stabilizing his health.
In his message, Pope Francis also marked the third anniversary of the war in Ukraine and urged prayers for peace in conflict areas globally. His absence from the Angelus prayer has highlighted his vulnerability and the importance of worldwide support.
