As the world marked International Women’s Day 2025, various events in Kenya emphasized the importance of empowering women and girls. Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi took the opportunity to urge the nation to take immediate action to support gender equality, highlighting the essential roles women play in socio-economic development and ensuring peace. Mudavadi emphasized that women’s voices must be amplified in peace negotiations and leadership positions to ensure that their perspectives are part of shaping the future of the nation.
In Ngong, children at the Huruma Children’s Home celebrated Mama Zipporah Kamau, acknowledging her unwavering dedication to offering shelter, care, and educational opportunities to vulnerable children. The children expressed gratitude for the better future she has given them, praising her as a loving mother figure who provides them hope for brighter days ahead.
Meanwhile, in Kitui, the National Council of Churches in Kenya (NCCK) celebrated the progress made in women’s empowerment while acknowledging the ongoing challenges, such as the increasing cases of gender-based violence and love-related killings, which demand urgent solutions. At the Kericho Women’s Prison, speakers echoed the sentiment that women’s empowerment is critical for societal growth, urging the integration of women into every aspect of life.
This year’s theme for International Women’s Day, “For ALL Women and Girls: Rights, Equality, and Empowerment,” encapsulates the continued struggle for gender equality. Although progress has been made, it is clear that more work is needed to ensure that all women and girls can thrive and contribute equally to society.
