A new dormitory worth Sh3.7 million for autistic children was officially opened at Korara Special Primary School for the Visually Impaired in Bomet East Sub-county. The project was funded by the National Fund for the Disabled of Kenya (NFDK).
Speaking at the event, NFDK Board Member Major (Rtd) Masden Madoka emphasized the organization’s commitment to ensuring children with disabilities receive quality education in well-equipped schools. Madoka recalled his previous visit to the school, where he observed the challenges the students faced due to inadequate facilities. He explained that the dormitory project was initiated to address these issues and provide better living conditions for the children.
“We saw the difficulties the children were facing, and as NFDK, we decided to step in and make a difference,” Madoka said.
Bomet East Member of Parliament, Richard Yegon, who also attended the event, presented a Sh310,000 cheque from the NG-CDF to support 31 learners in the school’s visually impaired unit. Yegon praised NFDK’s efforts and expressed his commitment to improving facilities for children with disabilities in the region.
He encouraged parents to bring their children with disabilities to school, saying, “Every child has a right to education. The government provides for special education, and it’s important to take advantage of these opportunities.”
South Mugirango MP Silvanus Osoro, who joined Yegon at the event, reinforced the message that education is a fundamental right in Kenya, especially for children with disabilities. He urged parents to overcome the stigma and enroll their children in school to ensure a brighter future for them.
During the event, various items were donated, including barber tool kits, welding machines, salon equipment, and farming tools, all aimed at empowering persons with disabilities in the area.
The opening of the dormitory marks a major milestone in improving both the education and living conditions of children with disabilities in Bomet County.
