Emmanuel, the youngest child of the late former IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati, has urged Kenyans to show respect and kindness following the passing of his father on February 20, 2025. In an emotional video that has gained widespread attention, Emmanuel shared his surprise and disbelief at the public’s celebration of his father’s death. He criticized the behavior of those who are ridiculing his family, asserting that Chebukati committed his life to the service of Kenya.
“I have never witnessed Kenyans unite to rejoice over the death of a compatriot,” Emmanuel remarked. “It’s painful to witness people mocking us during this sorrowful period.”
Emmanuel reflected on the importance of his father’s contributions, particularly his involvement in the nation’s democracy. He pointed out that his father, despite being a contentious figure for many, consistently adhered to the law and upheld constitutional values. The 25-year-old indicated that those who are celebrating his father’s passing are likely still grappling with the aftermath of the 2022 General Election, where Chebukati was a significant figure. Nonetheless, he stressed that his father’s choices were made with integrity and adherence to the law rather than personal bias.
“He executed his duties with integrity. He respected the law and the constitution, even when the outcomes did not meet everyone’s preferences,” Emmanuel elaborated. He called for empathy from the public, requesting that Kenyans grant his family the space and respect necessary for mourning without mockery.
Reacting to the harshness of certain online comments, Emmanuel conveyed how incredibly painful it was to hear that people were celebrating. “Some individuals are even claiming they will mark his death with jubilation,” he stated. “That hurts us deeply as a family.”
Emmanuel recognized that his siblings preferred to keep their mourning private but felt it necessary to defend his deceased father. He also addressed allegations of corruption, vehemently denying that his father was implicated in any misconduct.
“Regardless of what some might claim, our father was a person of integrity and was never involved in corruption,” he asserted. Emmanuel wrapped up by expressing his appreciation to leaders like President William Ruto and Kalonzo Musyoka for their expressions of sympathy, conveying gratitude for the support they have received during this challenging time.
