Ugandan comedienne Anne Kansiime recently stirred up a lively conversation after revealing that she once took the unique step of paying her own dowry. In a candid interview on Uganda’s NRG Radio, the talented entertainer shared the story behind her decision, offering a refreshing take on an age-old tradition.
Kansiime, a mother of one and a successful businesswoman, explained that her choice was motivated by the constant pressure from her late father. She recalled how he would regularly ask her when she planned to settle down, a question that weighed heavily on her. At the time, she was financially independent and had even launched her own business, making it possible for her to take control of the situation.
“I was tired of my father always asking me about it,” Kansiime confessed. “I was in a good financial position, making enough money to take care of it myself. So I thought, why not handle it directly? That way, we could stop the endless conversations and just move on.”
In her own words, Kansiime had frequently reminded her partner to take care of the dowry, but when he eventually gave her the money to do so, she decided to settle it herself. “Once I did that, I stopped pestering him, and my father never mentioned it again. But I’m not in that place anymore,” she added with a laugh.
While the move may seem unconventional, Kansiime has no regrets about her decision. In fact, she sees it as part of the journey that led her to where she is today. “I don’t regret anything that has happened in my past. Those experiences shaped me into who I am now, and we’ve got some great stories to tell because of them,” she said.
Kansiime’s story challenges traditional views on dowry payments and brings a modern perspective to the table. It’s a reminder that sometimes, taking matters into your own hands can lead to unexpected solutions and, ultimately, peace of mind
